Our Chicken Box from Dr. Cowan’s Pasture is stocked full of whole pastured chickens, legs/thighs, and wings, from birds who grew up enjoying a fresh patch of biodiverse pasture every day. Raised together in small flocks, Polyface Farms chickens are free to enjoy sunshine, fresh air and rich, fertile pastures, in a safe and stress-free environment. It takes a bit longer to raise a Polyface chicken, because they grow slowly and naturally, as appropriate for their species, resulting in a naturally more flavorful and delicious bird.

Your box includes:

(3-4) Whole Broilers, minimum of 13 lbs. of chicken
(4) Bone-In Chicken Legs and Thighs Packages, 1.3-1.8 lb. each
(2) Chicken Wings Packages, 1.6-2.0 lb. each
  • 100% Pasture-Raised
  • GMO-free
  • Antibiotic-free
  • Product of Polyface Farms, Swoope, VA

How are Dr. Cowan’s Pasture products from Polyface Farms shipped?
Dr. Cowan’s Pasture orders are shipped directly from Polyface Farms in Swoope, Virginia, in separate, insulated boxes, with dry ice and degradable packing peanuts to fill empty space. These are perishable items that require careful packaging to ensure they maintain temperature during the shipping process. Depending on what shipping zone you are in, in proximity to the farm, your order will be shipped via either UPS ground (1-2 day shipping time) or UPS 2-day Priority mail.

Why is the cost of shipping so much more than for Powders and Pantry products?
Our Powders and Pantry products are shelf-stable, and shipped from our central U.S. fulfillment center, via your choice of express or ground shipping. Our Pasture products are different; they are coming from the Salatin family farm in Virginia, and the meat products are shipped frozen on dry ice, in insulated packaging. Between the frozen meats and/or bones, the insulated box and enough dry ice to keep the product cool as it ships potentially across the country, these boxes are BULKY and HEAVY, and UPS shipping charges are based on weight and box dimensions.

When will my Pasture order ship?
Currently, Polyface Farms ships on Tuesdays, and your package will arrive to you in 1-2 days, 3 days maximum. Orders placed by Sunday at 7:00 p.m. EST will ship the following Tuesday.

How should I handle my Pasture box and the dry ice when it arrives?
Please transfer your product directly into your freezer or refrigerator as soon as possible after the box arrives. Handle your box, and any remaining dry ice, with extreme care. Open your box in a WELL-VENTILATED AREA to prevent asphyxiation, and DO NOT TOUCH THE DRY ICE WITH YOUR BARE HANDS. Use gloves, tongs or a towel. Touching dry ice can result in skin burns and/or irritation. Leave the dry ice to melt and dissipate into gas in a well-ventilated area and keep
away from children and pets. DO NOT EAT OR SWALLOW DRY ICE. Because dry ice can cause carbon dioxide gas to accumulate and build up pressure, DO NOT DISPOSE OF DRY ICE IN A SINK, SEWER, GARBAGE DISPOSAL, GARBAGE CHUTE, ETC.

Pastured Poultry
Learn More

Polyface chickens raised to be broilers live in harmonious groups that mimic natural flocking patterns. The Salatin family uses 10 ft. X 12 ft. X 2 ft. high floorless, portable field shelters housing about 75 birds each. Moved daily to a fresh pasture paddock, these birds receive fresh air, exercise, sunshine, and all the genetically modified organism-free (GMO-Free) local grain they want. The shelters serve to shade them from the harsh midday sun and protect them from natural predators such as coyotes and foxes. Integrating the cows to mow ahead of the chicken shelters shortens the grass and encourages ingestion of tender, fresh sprouts. Polyface animals are encouraged to eat as much “salad” (diverse vegetation) as their full genetic potential will allow.
